'I Know You Surfrider ~ Let's Rise Above Plastics'

Last summer I created this event and concert benefit with a fun effort to raise awareness on plastic pollution in San Diego, to keep our beaches and the ocean clean with the local Surfrider Foundation Chapter.

The name was inspired when the local Ocean Beach, CA band Slightly Stoopid covered ‘I Know You Rider’ with Bob Weir, one of the original band members of The Grateful Dead, and from all of their support with Surfrider over the years. Originally, there was an acoustic concert benefit with live art by the Southern California artist Cory Schnitzer to be hosted on the rooftop at L’Auberge Del Mar with production from Acoustic Spot Talent.

During the day there was going to be a beach clean-up, surf camp, and a yoga class with live music. I had been building my own sponsorship deck with support from Southern California sustainable companies, including Dr Bronner’s, Pura Vida & Slowtide, and many Surfrider Foundation San Diego Ocean Friendly Restaurants. I was also organizing an after-party on the Trilogy Sanctuary rooftop with aerial yoga & fire dancer performers, and potentially the screening of the surfing and snowboarding film ‘Fire On The Mountain’ with live music from Paul Cannon and Iron Sage Wood and Rob Machado.

Then, life as we know it stood still in March and so did all of my hard work. The pandemic halted this production and the four others that I had been developing for a ‘Summer Of Acoustic Concert Benefits’ at L’Auberge.

With plastic pollution even more on the rise now during the pandemic, I was determined to make this event happen somehow.  I tried to make this a drive-in concert benefit, yet with restrictions for large gatherings and the national charity organization upholding public gathering guidelines, that was not ideal during these times.

On the bright side, with gratitude to the Trilogy Tribe, we had a live-stream yoga & cirque show fundraiser happen for the local Surfrider San Diego Chapter on August 22nd, for Surfrider’s 36th birthday celebration.
The Trilogy rooftop in La Jolla, CA, hosted this virtual Vinyasa yoga & cirque show fundraiser that also featured live art, and live music with a DJ and percussion.
The class was lead by my beautiful friend Gabrielle Blachley, Monarch Yoga on Facebook & Instagram.

Much gratitude to my friend and founder of Trilogy, the lovely Leila Dora, for joining this fundraising event, and doing live art on her amazing mural on the rooftop.

An aerial cirque show on the Lyra hoop was the graceful Monika Pann     @m_aerial_hyponisis
